Some things you may want to consider:
- A database accessable to everyone, even if your pc is off.
, this probably means you need to talk to the webadmin of ML to see if you can have some MySQL space.. should not be much of a problem.
- Auto pairings.. preferred not via irc script, because the season can't pauze when you are on vacation. A cron job on the webserver should handle this.
- Timezoned sub-leagues. A player from spain can't always be awake or even available to play someone from brasil, because of the time difference. What you could do is.. have every person submit a week-sheet providing wich hours on wich days they are most likely to be available for playing.
You could use that for defining sub-leagues or just use them to define pairings. IMO you can't force people to stay up late / get up early just because they have a match.
Currently this is not an issue, because you can just come and play whenever you please, only trials and masters have these issues dealt with.
It seems like some php, sql would be the way to go.
(get pairings from http and echo them in irc with script) |

I like the idea of the sub-leagues according to timezone. Since the times I have available tend to be late at night, because of work and social life, keeping my matches in synch with that schedule would be great for me.
Also, I'd suggest that players need to play everyone else in their leagues at least once during the season. I'm assuming a one-year season (time between block rotations), and with the current 1400-something players registered here on Magic-League distributed in three league levels, with sub-leagues by timezone, that could roughly lead to 100 matches a year. Let's say a league has 128 members to make a nice number. That would yield 2-3 matches a week, which I think is a pretty reasonable number.
Since probably many players won't join the leagues, we can expect to have to play 2 matches a week to keep in line with the league development. That should be easily made to fit a tight schedule. At the end of the season, unplayed matches would not be counted towards the league total, which will naturally make the least active players to fall off their leagues, in favor of those that kept playing during the season.
These are my ideas. Comments and constructive criticism are greatly appreciated. |

it sounds like it might be able to work. You should start a pilot league first. maybe 50-75 players max. Make the system and get the rules in place first.
I like the idea though. 2 matches per week for each player - pairings and message board for times and dates to play.
i play in other leagues, but this sounds interesting.
what do we have to do to get it running/in place. |

you could also run short seasons - 2 months or so... meaning 24 games average...
this would make it not life breaking and would allow people in/out relatively fast. |

Match times should be set by the players, IMO..
4/5 games week - 1 month leagues would be perfect.. |

| I would 100% support this. While I don't currently play, once the new T2 rolls in, I'm gonna start playing again. With my current schedule, I wouldn't be able to compete as much as I'd like to. |
