Upcoming Master Tournaments

by CMA-Flippi on 2009-09-09 15:39 EST
Masters have always been the most exciting events on magic-league. Seven up to eleven Swiss rounds Magic gaming until one champion is elected. The best players of magic-league compete with each other, challenging each other again and again. Of corse, there are always some relatively "safe" favorites to Top8, but yet they have a long way. Also, these Masters can show who might become tomorrow's mtg-star.

For September, we have planned something more fascinating than what has ever been before. We held Limited Masters, we held Split-Format Masters. Now we're going for a Team Trios Master! While usually in Masters, it takes 'only' an individual's skill to win the trophy, it requires three! good players to win that event. One player will have to prove himself in Standard(T2), one has to show his proficiency in Legacy, and the third player has to show how he can win in the then rotated Extended(T1.x) format, without the so heavily played friendly-color fetchlands.

It will not be enough to have one professional player. Only a team of three can win!

Team Trios, as the name says is a team format. To play in the Team Trios Master, all you need to do is have each individual join the tournament at the site, then message the Coordinator of that tournament your teamname and its members. However, if one player loses alot, it will be hard for his teammates to shoulder the burden

So, you as you can see, making a wise choice on who will play might take some time For this reason, magic-league gives you a month time for this important decision.

The Team Trios Master will be held on October 10th.

That's in 4 weeks, which means there is alot of time for more events. Events as the first huge Constructed event using Zendikar, the new edition that's going to be released end of September;

Post-Rotation Standard (T2) Master will be held on September 27th.

This is the also the first day where we expect to have all Zendikar information officially confirmed by WotC. The new Standard (T2) format will include Shards of Alara, Conflux, Alara Reborn, M10 and Zendikar.

At the moment, there exists a partial spoiler for Zendikar on mtgsalvation. It includes a few cards that were confirmed by WotC and a lot of material that is still being speculated on. The biggest question is whether all enemy-color Fetchlands will be printed in Zendikar or if they're split among the block. Therefore, we decided it's the best to not have a Master with Zendikar until all cards are officially confirmed. This means the scheduled

Extended (T1.x) Master held on September 13th.

will be played with current Extended (T1.x) deckbuilding rules. These still include 8th and ONS and exclude Zendikar.

Now, a note about Byes.
For the Standard and Extended Masters, Byes will be given, as usual, to Trial winners, previous Master Top8 and the top ranked players on magic-league. It'd probably be very difficult to create a reasonable Byes list for the Team event, so this Master won't have any Byes.
Instead, all trial finalists from Sept 27th until the Invitational on Oct 24th will be on the list of invited players.

I am happy to answer any questions coming up, ask them as comment or in irc.

Team Canned Beavers...? will fucking take this shit!

I just need 2 good members.

i like this except please make the extended master post rotation again. Or wait a few weeks to hold it.
Having pre-rotation extended spoils the chance for ML to be a defining part of the Pro Tour metagame.

Damn, this would've been a perfect time to pull out the post-rot extended deck I've been working on. Sanctioned vintage should take away some of the sting, methinks ;)

by Linkman on 2009-09-11 04:23 EST

Ronnan, you me and another? :D

by Pollo on 2009-09-18 00:04 EST

Wait... so the post-rotation T2 master is using Zendikar or not? You say that the new t2 will include Zendikar, and then later you say that that its the best not to have a master with Zendikar. I'm confused.

by IvanDano on 2009-09-30 12:50 EST

question on Invitational...since you mentioned all Sept. 27th finalists...does that mean all of us who t8'ed the event are invited to it?

by Husapi on 2009-10-01 02:55 EST
