C&D News + (possible) Changes |

| As you all know we have received a Cease and Desist notice about 2 weeks ago.
Well basically we are still discussing some parts of it while having some changes done already. The following are permanent: - No more art of cards will be visible on the website - We have added a notice to make sure that people know that we are not associated with WotC in any kind of way. - We will not bring out any patch for any applications which violates the copyrights that WotC holds. Magic-League will stay and keep its name for now. We might change it in the future. When we do we will expand with other card games for online play. Not just Magic the Gathering. All of this is still under discussion. Also to make sure that you all know is that we will NOT stop, I repeat, We Will NOT stop hosting tournaments. Everything in that regard will stay. As a temporarily measure we have said that all tournament matches can be played at the players application of choice. However this means that if 2 people cannot play a match for being unable to use the same application they will BOTH be dq'ed. Rules that are specific for certain application will ALL stay to make sure that there will little to no problems. Please remember that this for now is temporarily. Another thing for now which is also temporarily till we decided what to do is that we removed all links to mws and apprentice. Last but not least we would like to thank everyone that has helped in anyway way from emailing us with information to voicing their opinion about this matter. Both on this site and on many others we have seen. Apparently this C&D has made a major impact even outside MtG related websites. However we do would like to say we have no interest in any law suit for which we have no money nor time. Also we respect the WotC as for they made the game and of course we therefor no intention to violate any copyrights. This does generate 1 problem which we might have to shutdown: Sealed. Sealed is at the moment the one that is siting in the Grey area. (The only part of the website). We are still looking into how we make sure this does not violate any copyrights. Sealed mini's are for now still allowed! (when we decide to remove sealed you will know, till then they are np) So we ask the judges to continue hosting tournaments as always and people to participate in them. For now we ask you all to use the application you are most used/comfortable with. Ah well, I can't think of a better plan off the top of my head so this will have to do I guess.

1. Thank you for taking the time to make this site work, and continue its existence. Obviously a lot of people spend time here, so, thank you. You probably don't hear it enough.
2. Sealed has been my favorite part of the site, I really, really hope it can stay.
3. To everyone that complains: Obviously the "you are both DQed if you can't play" will be a huge frustration on the rare occasions it comes up, but it's my understanding this is temporary, correct?
4. I don't want to be a jerk, but this news post could use some significant editing for spelling/grammar.

Jorbes on 2009-04-25 10:11 EDT In all fairness, maybe mws doesn't violate many copyrights, but it does make use of a lot of characteristics that wotc has patented for their M:tG game.
- The layout of the card (wich mws copies in the default render engine)
- The turn structure (out of the box, mws has all the phases and steps of mtg)
- The Zones (library, graveyard, hand etc COMBINED are patented)
As far as OPT is concerned. I need to strip alot of stuff from the code and make use of game definition files like OCTGN does.
It's not very hard to remove the mtg stuff from the program and load it separately, but it will take some time to do and work has been very demanding lately.

It's sad that WotC considers this small league a threat to their business. I suppose ml has crossed the line when it promoted for card images for mws or other programs, even if that happened mainly in the chat rooms.
Still, there are plenty of ways to continue this site without violating and copyrights of WotC.

but it fells better to play here then to make proxs,and if this is a free tournaments just for those players that can`t afford mtgo,and for the minors that play 1 important role in mtg community cause they r the future of this game,

and the kids at my local arena just don`t play cause when they do,they just get murthered by guys like me
most times we do our game and they just nod their heads like they have no clue watt we r doing,so i normally recommend them to play here cause its free and they can practise and learn better the game.
so i have no intention in teaching kids to play so if m_l helps ppl so test and evolve with no cust,so that when they go to local tournaments they perform better and enjoy that experience
thanks to m_l and shame on wizards for this action,cause in the long run will cost more players to magic and has a result money for wizards

Actually, Richard Garfield has almost nothing to do with the card game these days, he's a college professor somewhere, and he himself has said that he doesn't like the direction the game is going
