by
LordLink on 2009-04-21 14:39 EDT So now we have to dodge random silver bullets in trials where some retards are joining without ever having heard of MWS. :S Or someone is intentionally joining just to knock someone out round 1.
Ah well, I can't think of a better plan off the top of my head so this will have to do I guess.
Good to see we're still going.
by
TugaChampion on 2009-04-21 15:39 EDT They could still enforce the use of one program coughmwscough but just point this enforcement on the irc channels.

by
boeda on 2009-04-21 15:48 EDT Hell yeah!
Thanks to all who made this possible! It isn't hard to have an opinion about what needs to be done but to do it takes character and some free time too.
Let's hope Wizards now see our community has its place in the magic-universe!

Avata on 2009-04-21 16:50 EDT Some thoughts:
1. Thank you for taking the time to make this site work, and continue its existence. Obviously a lot of people spend time here, so, thank you. You probably don't hear it enough.
2. Sealed has been my favorite part of the site, I really, really hope it can stay.
3. To everyone that complains: Obviously the "you are both DQed if you can't play" will be a huge frustration on the rare occasions it comes up, but it's my understanding this is temporary, correct?
4. I don't want to be a jerk, but this news post could use some significant editing for spelling/grammar.
by
Azania on 2009-04-21 17:00 EDT @avata
I just did that yeah. Any other staff can edit it as if needed.. Was typed rather quickly at a friends comp.. Anyway all spelling errors should be gone now.
by
Coonan on 2009-04-21 17:40 EDT Just FYI, the "Currently our database is unfortunately down." page still links to download Apprentice and the Ravnica patch for it. Perhaps you should remove that?
by
FlyingFreak on 2009-04-21 17:45 EDT 1) Will there be trials soon?
YES-> go to question 2
NO -> go to question 4
2) Will there be a master soon?
YES-> go to question 3
NO -> go to question 4
3) Will there be a prize support for that master?
4) nvm

PV on 2009-04-21 19:09 EDT Oh, that's easy to solve
Just tell people they can use any program they want, with the exception of apprentice, which is banned due to copyright issues ;P

by

by
Spurious on 2009-04-22 01:27 EDT I'm really happy to see that you guys are handling this the right way. A lot of sites would have buckled and closed or perhaps even worse, done nothing and actually been shut down.
The tact and poise demonstrated by your rational and non-reactionary handling of this situation is truly impressive. You have my support in whatever means I can give it.
by
wyJETe on 2009-04-22 03:32 EDT Spurious i really agree with you i think that the staff involved with this site have done a awesome job at handling this situation and others and all the while remaining very professional (even if it means i got banned) they have my full support as well
-Thank you magic league staff
by
Linkman on 2009-04-22 04:59 EDT OPT also breaks copyright, so that's not allowed either. Seems like MWS is the only thing left here.

by
Alaric on 2009-04-22 15:32 EDT There's a solution to the apprentice/mws dilemma. You can't tell people to use a program that violates copyrights, but you can tell someone NOT to use a program. For instance "T2 tournament NO APPRENTICE" would work. amiright?
by
TugaChampion on 2009-04-22 16:16 EDT You could say "no apprentice and no opt. We reserve the right to not allow a certain program if we want to."
The 2nd thing is just in case someone brings something strange.
by
Zeph on 2009-04-22 21:25 EDT Alaric's idea seems nice
by
Mukke on 2009-04-23 13:54 EDT Great to see you still going!
Keep up the wonderful work, and if the evil Wizards play ball, I might also continue supporting MOL.
by
ThanosIsKing on 2009-04-24 05:49 EDT I might be missing something, but could someone please explain how Apprentice and OPT violate the copyright while MWS avoids it?
by
Ronnan on 2009-04-24 05:53 EDT who says mws avoids it
by
ThanosIsKing on 2009-04-24 12:28 EDT brimstone and Linkman made it seem like Apprentice and OPT are out for copyright reasons while MWS is still usable. I just got the impression that MWS does something that the other two don't do (or vice versa) when pertaining to the copyright.
by
Wiley on 2009-04-24 16:12 EDT Appr and Opt aren't allowed because they breach copyright by being too much like the real game - MWS crashes too much to be just like the real game.

LOOOOOOOOOOL
by
NahHolmes on 2009-04-24 17:04 EDT MWS is a generic card game player and doesn't come preloaded with MTG material and you can't even download MTG stuff on the same site that hosts MWS. That is not by accident and that's how they avoid copyright violation.
by
Ghoulax on 2009-04-25 09:50 EDT Thanks for making this site possible and keep it online.
And... Shame on you WotC, remember that we, THE PLAYERS, made you what you are. Without us, you don't exist.
Thanks again guys.
by
Jorbes on 2009-04-25 10:11 EDT In all fairness, maybe mws doesn't violate many copyrights, but it does make use of a lot of characteristics that wotc has patented for their M:tG game.
- The layout of the card (wich mws copies in the default render engine)
- The turn structure (out of the box, mws has all the phases and steps of mtg)
- The Zones (library, graveyard, hand etc COMBINED are patented)
As far as OPT is concerned. I need to strip alot of stuff from the code and make use of game definition files like OCTGN does.
It's not very hard to remove the mtg stuff from the program and load it separately, but it will take some time to do and work has been very demanding lately.
by
Fridolin on 2009-04-26 14:58 EDT I really appreciate what the ml community is doing right now and would like to express my gratitude for that. It's sad that WotC considers this small league a threat to their business. I suppose ml has crossed the line when it promoted for card images for mws or other programs, even if that happened mainly in the chat rooms.
Still, there are plenty of ways to continue this site without violating and copyrights of WotC.

by
tzaron on 2009-05-12 21:38 EDT well i dont play m_l our mtgo just the reall stuff
but it fells better to play here then to make proxs, and if this is a free tournaments just for those players that can`t afford mtgo, and for the minors that play 1 important role in mtg community cause they r the future of this game,
"and i think no 11 to 16 year old can afford a credict card"
and the kids at my local arena just don`t play cause when they do,they just get murthered by guys like me
most times we do our game and they just nod their heads like they have no clue watt we r doing,so i normally recommend them to play here cause its free and they can practise and learn better the game.
so i have no intention in teaching kids to play so if m_l helps ppl so test and evolve with no cust,so that when they go to local tournaments they perform better and enjoy that experience
thanks to m_l and shame on wizards for this action, cause in the long run will cost more players to magic and has a result money for wizards
by the way the guy that created magic has forgotten why he did it he just tinks he is "tio patinhas"now

by
Benobi on 2009-05-21 05:17 EDT "by the way the guy that created magic has forgotten why he did it he just tinks he is "tio patinhas"now "
Actually, Richard Garfield has almost nothing to do with the card game these days, he's a college professor somewhere, and he himself has said that he doesn't like the direction the game is going
