Regarding Recent Network Bans (Updated)

by Gerrardfo on 2009-03-26 19:01 EST
Recently a user nicked PYY became banned from the solidirc network for severe abuse of channels and other users. Because of his continued effort to evade his server bans, the network recently implemented a ban on the .pt ISP domain to block his entry. We do know this ban affects other users from .pt, and we are looking for ways to restrict PYY and to allow innocents to enter the network.

Update: Saturday, 28 March,
The akill is removed. Portuguese players should be able to join solidirc again.

Thats something at least, though I have got to say I am disappointed in your destroying of some of my threads. I did everthing I could to allow a mature debate to devlope may I suggest in future you delete peoples posts who are unable to discuss topics in such a matter rather than the enire thread, it just gives the wrong impression.

I am always one for taking the moral high ground and I hope you do so if there is no simple resolution to the matter.l

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

I knew he was kind of retarded, but enough to cause this kind of crisis? Wow, I surely have been away for a long time now. :/

As i said before i realy dont get it. Its the internet. If you wish you could proxy your connection to another country.

by MrBrett on 2009-03-27 05:32 EST

I'm tempted to post a link on how to bounce your connection, but I'm affraid I could cause a European ban. :s

As i said before i realy dont get it. Its the internet. If you wish you could proxy your connection to another country."

That's just what Pyy did...And now we're all banned.

by Wiley on 2009-03-27 11:53 EST

I'm going to start by saying that I know this isn't by itself a very big deal (just a game, just the internet, etc) and so everything I say is on the terms of people who think it is a big deal, and addresses whether SolidIRC's internal reasoning is valid (not whether it's valid say, balanced against the importance of people being able to play magic for free on the internet).

That being said I think Portuguese players have every reason to be suspicious of SolidIRC. What we've heard is basically that someone did something so egregious that he had to be banned, but for what behaviour he was banned we haven't been told - essentially we're told, "trust us, it's so bad he and an entire country have to be banned". Then we're told that they're looking into a solution that makes everyone happy - ban PYY but don't ban all of Portugal (never mind the fact that such a solution probably doesn't exist). So the question-which no one up until now has asked-should be: why didn't they do this before? Why did they resort to the most extreme measure possible (short of banning the whole earth, which I'm certain SolidIRC will do someday once they've banned everyone with a sense of humour) if it's possible that there's an alternative, and if PYY was supposedly bothering them for months?

I don't doubt that PYY deserved the ban, but we all know how frustrating SolidIRC's policies can be (indiscriminate banning of users/channels they don't like, virtually no accountability for ops who abuse power or appeal in cases where someone has a grievance about a punishment, etc etc etc) so it's very likely he was provoked to do what he did. No one just acts like a douche for no reason. The way I see this, SolidIRC could have done the same thing when the #limited4you gang was banned and people would have blindly accepted it.

The big problem really is that we have an entire country banned for the actions of one person, which as of yet are unknown to us, in a very sloppy and unprofessional way (ie "we're no longer accepting abuse from that country" hardly implies that one person is at fault) and even if SolidIRC's intentions were the purest, they've let us down enough in the past for M-L to be justified in doubting that.

by Gerrardfo on 2009-03-27 12:31 EST

1) We need to create a solution, still unsure what all possibilities are.
2) PYY caused a wider ban range because of his evasion; blame his abuse of dynamic IP.

by nico on 2009-03-27 12:54 EST

As an addition I like to say that I don't understand the complaining about solidirc policies, since we as magic-league don't decide on the policies, nor do we enforce them.
If you want to know more about the why and how, I suggest you turn to the proper people, in this case the solidirc management. As I said before, this case is not in our hands.

by PoonWrangler on 2009-03-27 14:04 EST

Basically what I'm reading is you banned a lot of people because of this one person. So even though he isn't on the server, he's still trolling and cause problems...with the IRC Ops as his help. GOOD JOB, IRCOPS!

by Esibnitsud on 2009-03-27 14:44 EST

thats a good point ^^

by Bushviper on 2009-03-27 16:32 EST

So PoonRangler, do you just refuse to read the relavent information or what? As nico said, this has nothing to do with m-l nor do Gfo, Nico, or Flippi have any control over it.

by Wiley on 2009-03-27 19:50 EST

Actually BV I think Gfo is an ircop, but either way nothing in Poonwrangler ie "Red"'s post indicated that he was blaming M-L.

I'd like to clarify the same for my post. The only reason I'm criticizing SolidIRC here as opposed to in their channel is precisely because they would never tolerate it, and here they have no authority plus there's an audience of people who understand the frustration many people feel with SolidIRC.

by TheBends on 2009-03-27 19:54 EST

Hack Pyy's computer obv.

by TugaChampion on 2009-03-27 20:12 EST

I actually almost dropped a tear (no sarcasm) after reading several comments of non-portuguese players being unhappy with this situation and not even one comment saying something like "at least we got rid of tugachampion this way".

When I can play again I'll sure try to whine less and all that stuff I'm known for. In other words I'll try not being an asshole LOL.

by Tird_Ape on 2009-03-27 21:51 EST

Finally! Tuga's gone!

by Morpheus2222 on 2009-03-27 23:00 EST

LMAO wow just think if they banned America ? or Europe XD or both muahaha!

by TacoMaster on 2009-03-27 23:20 EST

Then you might win? :P

by Qamiqaze on 2009-03-27 23:46 EST

i feel sorry for the portugese. reminds me of when aol was banned back in the day in a previous league.

by Morpheus2222 on 2009-03-28 00:32 EST

Hmm it seems like IRC is trying to stop terrorism by supressing a country does that sound familiar to anybody?

by Weedmonkey on 2009-03-28 01:59 EST

Morpheus: Us operators can't be around all day to deal with the BS Pyy was causing all the time. It's either let a kid loose with a flamethrower in an empty house or lock the kid out. We opted for the less destructive option.

by Shooter on 2009-03-28 10:17 EST

which is much less fun ofc ;)

by NahHolmes on 2009-03-28 12:46 EST

Yeah the banning of AOL from a dickload of sites is what I think of everytime something like this comes up. That brings up an interesting point though. I wonder if you could ban his service provider if the connection originates from Portugal. At the same time though Tuga said he thinks other people helped him evade the ban, so in reality they are equally responsible. If something like this originated from America they would probably ban the region or service provider if it was dynamic IP.

by Sofa0King on 2009-03-28 15:16 EST

Weedmonkey, my one true love, you sir, are a friggin ignore-rame-moose...or some snazzy insult to that effect.

The most wonderful thing about data is no one can fuck it up if you have a backup.

So pretty much, it's like letting Pyy run around your room with a flamethrower until her get's dizzy and burns himself, then trucking in a new house for completely free, and then letting Sofa0King run around your house with his pants off setting on things like your face.

Get the idea? There's no real proof this kid could do anything other than change his IP address.

Can't you ban people by their MAC addresses?

by Weedmonkey on 2009-03-28 16:20 EST

Portugal has been unbanned by the SolidIRC staff.

by TugaChampion on 2009-03-28 17:37 EST

OMG OMG OMG!!! I can join again!

by Flaxh on 2009-03-28 19:36 EST

Speaking in the name of #portugal: thanks a lot!

by DS_McWerp on 2009-03-29 15:13 EST

Why is this a big deal. Its not like this shit is new. If someone does bad stuff, and then try to evade this happens until the guys at irc and fix it. I have no idea how they do it...but its been done to toher areas before. I believe wisconson once (awesome) and maybe Quebec too. Its just one of those things you have to deal with every now and then if youw ant to play MTG for free online. Dont blame the IRCOPS, blame the asshole who was causing all the trouble.

by TugaChampion on 2009-03-29 16:31 EST

It is a big deal of those who are banned...

by x1134x on 2009-03-29 21:47 EST

So I was right, the only way they can ban you is ban higher and higher on the subnet up to the ISP's range. Different IP, Different ISP segment, Different IRC client. . . = unbannable.

by HdH_Cthulhu on 2009-03-30 06:31 EST

if you dont have to make a dna test while registring, yes you are unbanable
