User registration for opt now working

by nico on 2008-08-29 18:23 EST
Due to a a bug in the new client, it was impossible to register a new account. This bug has been fixed. Also some server commands made the server crash, wich incidentally is something we don't like. You can download the latest version of the client here

To register a new account, login to the magic-league server on this adress: magic-league.game-server.cc . If that adress doesnot work, use the ip adres 83.119.184.87

Username: new, no password required.

the registration command is: /reg nickname password.

You will be disconnected automatically and a profile will be created, wich you can find in the top menu item; server --> main server
click the appropriate link and you connect to the magic-league server.

I'm not sure if anyone has asked this before, if yes, sorry to repeat myself:

Is OPT betatest predicted to replace MWS in a near future?

by nico on 2008-08-29 18:58 EST

Well, because the project is done in the spare time of jorbes, there is no way of saying when it is finished, or if it will ever be finished because there are always new things to add.
As to when will opt be ready enough to be used as a replacement of or alongside mws, well, there is no timeframe set on it because bug hunting is a long and tedious thing, with unpredictable outcomes.

Im getting a socket error 10061: connection refused

Do we need to change the port or is it the default one (3000)?

They work in their spare time...

This is obviously not serious.

If you want something serious, put smart, qualified people to WORK in the stuff. And hopefully pay them, well. Nothing is free, and if you want quality you have to pay for it.

I find Imposssible (yes, like a title) making something serious about the "OPT", I've hearing about it about maybe 1 year or more (sure more) and there's nothing really going on. I've downloaded the client and all, and has so, so many failures, wich I can't even describe, and I don't mean specifically functionality failures.

I only can think a project like this have 2 outs, 1 is erase all and put new people with the base of the last program made, and 2, put the people to actually work and add new people to give the good ideas, and limit those people only to program.

It's almost like, the upcoming magic-league new home page design... the design is awful, to say the least, and it has years and years and more years being the same.

Really.

I find it very strange that you even bother to take a look at this site because of the failure it is, according to you.

Now for some more topic related comment: Do you really understand what the costs would be if a staff would be hired to make a program like this? This would make the program to be not free, and this is something we really don't want. Same goes for the site design. If we were able to pay people for designing the site, we would. As it stands, the site is run on a voluntary base, and is doing quite alright for the past 6 years.
I know the design is not the most beautiful, but that is not what we are aiming at. We are working on a functional site with a working ranking system and an active community.
If we can find people that can help us, they are always welcome to contact us, as long as they understand that we are not able to pay them, and this is exactly where the problems is with a lot of people.
I do get messages from people that say they want to help out working on the site, and make it prettier/more functional. The moment however it is mentioned that it is all on a volunteer basis somehow the enthusiasm is lowered a lot. From the people that don't shy away after that, most of them are not able to write code well enough to make a satisfactory result, and others have the energy drained away when it becomes clear what the amount of work is that is needed to make a site like this.
Also, back to OPT, I like to add that Jorbes is a good programmer who is putting a lot of energy in making a program for people to play cardgames on-line with a lot of additional functions completely FOR FREE. I don't know how well your memory is serving you, but the last program that has hit the net was made so you can only utilize it to the fullest if you pay for it, and the development has been absent for over a year.
