PV on 2008-07-29 14:37 MST I think its a good idea, but I don't think it makes any sense to invite t4 in 'other' - this seemns it's just giving 4 invites to the 4 judges who bother to make tournaments in formats only they know about the most
by
Karla on 2008-07-29 14:57 MST :/ i love the idea but i cant play this suck's ¬¬
by
Goodman120 on 2008-07-29 15:15 MST nice, but what about teams?

by
Avata on 2008-07-30 00:28 MST Even though it's unlikely I'll be able to play in this event, I'd still like to say thanks for putting on a limited invitational, since I love limited.
So, thanks. :)

Conkisstador on 2008-07-30 01:08 MST sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet time to make some moneys!
i'm the one judge, PV, and it's mostly from post-patch pre-legal sets. also top4 other are already represented in other qualifications.

Another thing, is 9/8 master going to have the same format as invitational? sealed swiss + top8 draft?

by
Conkisstador on 2008-07-30 08:59 MST the squeeky wheel always gets oil. there's no incentive for people who LIKE the date to say they like it but there IS incentive for people who DONT like it to say so.
changing it on absurd pretences is in itself absurd.
aug 23.
here's my wheel being squeaky against ANYTHING not dated august 23. on principal and function.
by
Shagrath on 2008-07-30 09:16 MST there's no reason to change dates. just because invitational date is the same of spanish nats doesn´t mean that it must be changed, cuz the world doesn´t stop because of spanish nats.
maybe in other date it will be bad for some1 else and then other ppl will complain
again, so if gerrardfo and his crew decided that invitational will happen in this date, we all must accept that.
by
CMA-Flippi on 2008-07-30 10:04 MST aside from sp. nats, theres also GP kopenhagen on 23 august
by
Conkisstador on 2008-07-30 10:29 MST german nats and gp manila are on aug. 30th.

Too bad there are no good German players on magic-league xD
*runs from the flaming*
by
magic_man11 on 2008-07-30 14:47 MST I must agree with conkistador on this one! There's no reason the date should be moved. I mean why is spanish nats and gp copenhagen ne different from german nats and gp manilla. I mean if you were to change the date shouldnt it be a date where there is no other large money tournaments?
by
PureControl on 2008-07-30 15:13 MST I find it hard to believe you guys didnt know the Gp's dates.
by
Ashmatan on 2008-07-30 15:14 MST I think invitationals are stupid to begin with cuz it ousts the chance for any players to compete that have a lot of game, but just aren't up to snuff with the online portion of magic (only m-l I mean) and don't have all the time in the world to veg out in front of their screen to up their rating like most of the people that have their limited and constructed points sky high. The only way to do that would be to enter every trial and mini possible and try your hardest to win the frist round and then just drop cuz no one would be able to afford a loss in the meantime. In a nutshell, I'm saying that I personally feel that I have a lot of game and could do well depending on what I would crack, but feel segregated from the tourney only due to the fact that I don't play enough to have my rating high enough to be given an invitation. That is bogus.
by
nico on 2008-07-30 15:42 MST ashmatan, did you bother to read the message well enough to see that rating is not the only way to get an invitation?
read the following again:
*** begin c&p****
Invitations will be awarded to:
*Top 50 Limited players
*Top 16 Constructed players
*Top 8 Eternal players
*Top 4 Other players
*Players who place 1st or 2nd in a trial (7/21-8/29)
***end c&p***
read the last line again (and again, if needed)
See? if you got a good game as you claim, it won't be that hard to qualify for the invitational.

by
Conkisstador on 2008-07-30 15:48 MST ashmatan isn't your rating approaching 1400? i don't think time helps with that. try to get lucky in a trial
by
magic_man11 on 2008-07-30 22:47 MST rofl at ashmatan, like seriously not enuf time? i think ive played in 3 trials and my rating is sitting at a nice 1841 and even then if ur that good a player u can always just play 1 trial and win? i mean come on its not that hard to get a que!

RiQuSP on 2008-08-04 04:24 MST Nice they moved it a week! Now I can play.. let's hope ill stay top50 limited for the next few weeks :D

by
Ashmatan on 2008-08-05 14:59 MST @ nico--yes I did read the last line to begin with. I have finished 2nd ONCE to Eldariel in a block trial. The only reason being that I lucksacked in my pairings 3/6 rds. I find it difficult to play in trials not cuz I'm playing against superior opponents most of the time, but cuz either they A) rules cheese like crazy or I B) get screwed over by MWS' infamous shuffler. I'm not ranting, just being factual.
@ conk--you can check out my profile any time you wish to see that it is not 1400, smartass. I had a very bad first few limited games losing to people who know how to use the system to their advantage. Probably 75% of the matches I've lost came down to the time factor and "whomever has more life when time is called wins" rule. I can only participate in about 3 trials a week cuz of the start time ( and I'm being generous to myself by saying that ) and 1 of those I won't play in cuz it's vintage or something and I just don't play that format. One thing I will agree with you on ( and most would have to agree ) is that there is a lot of luck involved in top 2ing a constructed trial. In fact IMO about 50% is play skill, 25% MWS shuffler, and 25% pairings (bad matchups one way or the other )Meaning every match is a coin flip essentially, and in my experience, I'm on the losing side of the 50% most of the time.
That is all.
by
ZW on 2008-08-06 09:19 MST You dont get screwed by the shuffler, it is as random as possible and is the same one your opponents use. Also, I havn't the slightest idea of how your opponents "rules cheese" you. They trick you into not responding to spells? Also, you say 75% of your matches come down to who has more life. In that case, either build a better deck, play a little quicker or just attack with creatures. I have been on here for about 6 months and have had a match come down to life once, maybe twice. There is nothing wrong with the MWS shuffler, it is perfect, it is just inconsistant deckbuilding. In real life you get bad hands too. Lastly, mtg is about 80% skill, 20% luck. If it wasn't so, the best players wouldn't keep winning. It is easier to get unlucky here because it is single elimination, but if you are good and play enough you will have success. That is all.

"I think its a good idea, but I don't think it makes any sense to invite t4 in 'other' - this seemns it's just giving 4 invites to the 4 judges who bother to make tournaments in formats only they know about the most"
Not true at all, there are lots of non judges around the top 10 in other category
by
Ashmatan on 2008-08-09 10:02 MST @ZW--obv you didn't read the entire post. 75% of the matches I've LOST. Not 75% of matches total. Also, I have to disagree with you about the shuffler. If it was perfect, then my ML rating would reflect my DCI rating, hands down. Among these 3 facts: the life rule, the "whoever wins game 1" rule, and the shuffler, I would be in the running for a bye in the master. and again, I don't have all the time in the world to sit in front of the computer waiting for minis. I have a life, a family, I don't go to college like most of the community, I go to work everyday, I'm not some albino that chooses to stay inside and veg out infront of a screen. I have housework to do, yardwork to do, a 6 year old. and a wife. When you get those things, if ever, you will find out what life is all about. Then you will find out how much time you have for magic. Hardly any. Unless you don't want to sleep.
by
SoggyToast on 2008-08-09 23:42 MST @Ashmatan: It took me just over a week to get into the top 50 Limited. If you aren't a scrub it's easy to advance here. Don't blame it on the program.
by
snoopster on 2008-08-10 00:59 MST the randomness of the mws shuffler has been challenged multiple times, studies have been conducted, and each time the shuffler has been shown to be completely random.
