Regionals Report: *4th*
Written by ringman on June 06, 2007 Regionals Report: *4th*by ringmanI would like to start this article the best possible way; meaning, I won't talk about how I woke up or anything. When I got to the tournament site, I immediately realized it was going to be a tough day. Inside Odivelas school 111 people were signed in to play in two tiny rooms, and the temperature was something like 30 ºC. Now about my deck: everybody who knows me knew I would play a net deck card by card. I chose a deck called "Perilous Storm," which was invented by a friend of mine nicked Gozu, but I didn't have hatching plans, so I opted for dredge (maybe because it was the only deck I could get everything). The list is straight from volrath89 master win because it was way more consistent than the UBg dredges that appeared on wizards. My decklist:
Round 1: WGR fungus fire I remember how these games went because I lost against it. ![]() Game 1: First game I started with a mull, only being able to dredge on the third turn due to life from the loam played and getting no lands. My opponent does some signets helix to remove my bridges from the game. At that point he had no hand and I was safe to flashback dread return targeting hellkite. Then he draws harmonize and from harmonize I see two Hierarchs and a Wrath of God. He ended up playing more Hierarchs and eventually killed me. Game 2: I start with the greenseeker troll opening while he goes dual, go. I dredge troll and see a narcomoeba coming into play and three bridges. I knew next turn I might be killing him if I was lucky enough. I happily pass the turn only to see his tormods crypt that removed my three bridges. The game then got boring with the same plays. Dredge troll, play troll, kill troll etc… Then after he ran out of answers for my troll I was at twelve life and saw him counting two times his lands, meaning he had demonfire. He only had twelve lands and I was two turns away from killing him, so I played let him at two life and passed only to see him rip the land off the top to win the game…Well, it happens and I was 0-1 at a seven-round tourney when I could only lose one round. ![]() Round 2: I saw my name at table 55, which meant I was playing at the last table. That was not a very good sign. I was playing against Ur tron with wildfire. Game 1: I started with llanowar mentor and imp in hand, so it was a keepable hand despite the rest. He somehow manages to draw the three electrolyzes before I dredge any bridge and surprisingly he wildfired all of my creatures and lands. I wasn’t expecting it because I had never played against ur tron playing wildfire main. It was just a piece of time until he dropped a hellkite and we were off to game two. Sideboard: Out: 4 delirium skeins, 3 street wraith, 3 lftl, 1 flame kin zealot. In: 4 firemane angel (so I wont get to the demonfire range), 3 nightmare void, 4 krosan grip. Game 2: This game was the nuts. I opened with greenseeker troll and killed him on the fourth turn with hellkite reanimated four times. Game 3: I had a slow start but nightmare void did the job. Round 3: ![]() This time I get paired against Ub pickles. The first time I saw a morph coming into play I knew it was going to be an easy matchup. Game 1: I only start to dredge turn four due to a leaked imp. He does not attack anymore and I win easily. Sideboard: Out: 4 delirium skeins, 3 street wraith, 1 Akroma angel of wrath. In: 4 firemane angel (he can try to race me all day long), 4 krosan grip. Game 2: He tries to race me as predicted and he would have done it wasn’t for the firemanes lying in my graveyard. He does a mistake of letting me discard and then wanting to play a teferi that would have won the game (silly boy). I manage to control the game with stinkweep imps and golgari grave trolls. When I was at twenty life he makes a silly mistake: he repeals my 11/11 troll and in response he tries to copy it, unmorphing a vesuvan shapeshifter. I obviously let him do it and then say it dies. He calls the judge and got so pissed he made so many mistakes that took him out of the game completely (if he wasn’t already). ![]() Round 4: I learned that my opponent was playing gruul as he flashed a kird ape while shuffling. I knew it would be a bad matchup, but I knew too he was not the best player in the world, so I was confident. Game 1: I keep a decent hand with greenseker and troll in a mull to five. He gets the usual kird ape mauler opening but unfortunately for him the second dredge revealed akroma and dread return so the game was sealed. Sideboard: Out: 4 delirium skeins, 3 street wraith, 1 lftl In: 4 firemane angel, 4 krosan grip Game 2: I go with llanowar mentor imp in hand and he was so worried about removing my bridges from the game he forgot what he needed was to attack. He killed his mauler, kird ape, and rusalka himself to kill my three bridges, which meant I happily started attacking with my stinkweed imp at my precious twenty-two life with two firemane angels in my grave. A few dredges after and two golgari grave trolls 10/10 later he conceded. Finally I was in the top fifteen tables and everyone was saying there was only one dredge at the top tables. This argument had a bad and a good situation. The good was it was me who was at the top tables and the bad was dredge was hated out of the top tables meaning I would have to face hate to top 8 at this regionals. Round 5: Now I was paired against Angelfire, and I had never seen this guy in a tournament before so I did not knew how good he was at this games. ![]() Game 1: I start with the usual opening this time with a greenseeker and imp. Turn two I think about dredging or not and my opponent starts threatening me and saying I was stalling. I laughed at him and said a draw wasn’t good for me and that I wasn’t stalling. He then says he would solve that outside later for offending him. Well guess what he never showed up After a few beatings from narcomoebas later he concedes. Sideboard: Out: 4 delirium skeins, 3 street wraith. In: 4 krosan grip, 3 nightmare void While I was sideboarding my opponent keeps bitching again calling a judge and saying I had my sideboard without covers and I was cheating. The judge checks and says they are all correct and everybody around starts laughing at him each time he threatens me. Game 2: Same opening as usual this time, and with thee turn two creatures in play, a dread return in my graveyard, flame kin zealot and three bridges from the below next turn I would win certainly. My opponent pays three mana and court hussar comes into play. But only after he played it I realized he played white and let him coming into play. So next turn game over he whines a little more I laugh at him and get my third straight win. ![]() Round 6: This time my pairings were not lucky for me as I got paired versus a mono-black sort of discard deck. He his very talkative, a fact which lead me to thinking he would make mistakes eventually. Game 1: I get a hand of land, land, troll, bridge, stinkweed imp, life from the loam, and dread return. First game is so easy for me that I fell I do not need to give you details because they do all the hard work for you. But games two and three will be harder because it's from black that the hate comes/ Side board: Out: 4 delirium skeins, 3 street wraith, 1 lftl. In: 4 firemane angel, 4 krosan grip. Game 2: He gets the explosive beats killing my greenseeker with the black charm and then my two llanowar mentors with two more charms. After those wild plays I get no action and he drops a dark confidant. The first revealed card from confidant is an extirpate meaning no good things are coming. He extirpates my bridges. Two turns after he double extirpates my troll and dread returns. And after he plays a withered wretch I start thinking about conceding. I ask the judge the time left in the round and he says fifteen minutes meaning we had time for another one. While I thought he decides to attack with confidant ravenous rats and… withered wretch I obviously said block with everything I had and everything I didn’t. Then I manage to stabilize with imps dredges and kill I am with the svoghos. So there I was at 5-1 and at that time everyone was saying all the 5-1s could draw to get in I was very happy. Round 7: So I was the last player in standings with 5-1 and could not draw in the top so I had to play. I was paired down vs. a 4-1-1 player that could not get in. At the start of the round the lady from devir arena (who handles the tournament organization in Portugal, Spain and Brasil) was giving fat packs randomly to players who were still playing. Lucky me I was one of the players to get it. My opponent was playing Wb martyr. Game 1: I start with turn one greenseeker and a second turn dredging golgari grave troll while he had nothing more than a martyr and an arena into play. I started attacking with a couple narcomoebas and stinkweep imps and suddenly he was at nine life. He casts Wrath of God only to see me having an army of 2/2 tokens (he was mana-screwed so no mana to activate martyr) and dealt him the final damage points of the game. Sideboard: Out: 4 delirium skeins, 3 street wraith ![]() In: 4 krosan grip, 3 nightmare void Game 2: I open my hand of seven and see four lands stinkweed imp nightmare void and krosan grip. It was a bad hand game one but I knew I needed both nightmare void and krosan grip to win the game so I kept. My opponent did indeed have leyline turn zero so I was already happy for the keeper. On my third turn my opponent castigates me and I answer with krosan grip on his leyline and he takes out my void. At this point I only needed to draw some good stuff and expect he didn’t have extirpate. He didn’t and I managed to win the game by topdeking the next turn a nightmare void taking out his arena leaving him with three Wrath of Gods. From now on I started attacking with svoghos and he never stood a chance from that point. After seven rounds of struggle and six of them in grinder mode, I top 8 and got a fatpack (I did lose like 10 kilograms while sweating). And that is my report of regionals. I hope you enjoyed and every deck you choose is a good option for regionals because the top 8 was comprised of eight different decks (UR tron, dredge, solar flare, DS, Ub moroi tempo, Ur perilous storm, Flores teachings and mono black discard rack). -ringman Comments:

Hagar on 2007-06-06 19:05 MDT not to bad but your a nub :) by Shooter on 2007-06-06 19:11 MDT top8? by Volrath89 on 2007-06-06 19:26 MDT by Shooter on 2007-06-06 21:11 EDT
by Vlada on 2007-06-06 19:32 MDT Ringman, i never thought you are some uber good player, but i had at least decent oppinion about you, i am really dissapionted after this, and we all just couldnt stop laughing @ your SB-ing.
by Pollo on 2007-06-06 19:39 MDT Good Job on top8.
by kcaccidental on 2007-06-06 20:31 MDT Vlada: You are the worst person on magic-league. by plusua on 2007-06-06 21:10 MDT Cool report, very well written, needed more information. Any tips on keeping track of the rounds? Another thing, you posted: He then says he would solve that outside later for offending him. Well guess what he never showed up:
by ShadowS on 2007-06-06 21:17 MDT I would have liked more detail on the matches, it felt a bit rushed. Please write more next time =) by Metzel on 2007-06-06 21:21 MDT best way to keep track for a report during a turny is noting little things like writing LM OG next to first turn for Llanowar Mentro Overgrown Tomb etc dredging and what is dealing dmg...at least thats how i do it by Kytep on 2007-06-06 21:27 MDT It looks to me like you sided the Delirium Skeins out in every match, against a wide variety of decks (Tron, Pickles, Gruul, Angelfire, discard). Would you suggest replacing them with something else in the main deck?
by WoodSage on 2007-06-06 21:31 MDT "I reanimated Hellkite 4 times"... how do you do that? I mean, you have one hellkite, 4 Dread Returns, and let's say 3 bridges, 1st time just reanimate, 2nd time you sac the Hellkite + 2 creatures (get 3 from Bridge) and you target Hellkite, does that work or do you have to name targets before paying the cost?
by Shivan1 on 2007-06-06 23:00 MDT uhhh round 6 - how did you deal with withered wretch? you have absolutely NO answer for that card and he will just remove all of your creatures rendering your GGT's and Svogthos worthless - or are you saying he attacked into something with it? I don't understand why he would do such a thing - was it a svogthos he attacked into? Please explain because black rack *should* rape your deck post board. by Holzi on 2007-06-07 03:22 MDT Hmh, maybe you should not sided out Delirium Skeins against Control Decks for the Firemanes, but hey you made top 8 in 7 rounds (which is much more than here in Austria...) and i think you know what you did...
by flynnT on 2007-06-07 03:23 MDT i stopped reading when you SBed delirium skeins out versus tron to bring in firemane angels. by Eldariel on 2007-06-07 03:34 MDT Netdecking is fine and all, but no sideboard is perfect for the upcoming tournament, you should always strive to improve it. If you netdeck a sideboard, you rarely know what all the cards are for, if you build it yourself, you at least know why you've got the cards. by TugaChampion on 2007-06-07 03:47 MDT OMG!!! So many bad players!!! You lost to Fungus Fire (LOLOLOL) and your round 3, 4, 5 and 6 all made big mistakes!!! Also you were lucky against the ones that didn't make mistakes!!!
by ringman on 2007-06-07 04:39 MDT First of all sry for not giving detailed matches but i tought it would be too long for an article.:/ To delirium skeins being sideboarded out every match well its true it does suck alot except versus dragonstorm wich i did not face.:/
by Kev on 2007-06-07 05:50 MDT LOL
by ringman on 2007-06-07 05:55 MDT Kev you are maybe right as my only play tests witth the deck were in regionals as i have never played with the deck before but from what i've saw it sucked balls:/ by Alex_leut on 2007-06-07 09:05 MDT Hey good report :)
by Kev on 2007-06-07 09:33 MDT Against control you have 1-2 turns extra, so you can get away with boarding out a life from the loam, a dread return and a street wratih. Put in 3 Nightmare VOid and its fine. When you get into demonfire range vs. tron, you have already lost, or messed up pretty bad. That matchup is like 80% in your favor.
by GilardiNo on 2007-06-07 14:16 MDT You didn't talk about how funny and cute I am =(
by RandomToni on 2007-06-07 16:14 MDT epa eu era o gajo do solar flare... lol... n te vi la... by scwizard on 2007-06-07 16:14 MDT <s>Huh? It ends after the T8 begins. What about that one T8 match you won and that other you lost?</s>
by RandomToni on 2007-06-07 16:19 MDT i was the winner and i get a fat pack too... weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee solar flare 4ever... by scwizard on 2007-06-07 17:31 MDT What country's regionals was this?
by Tiggy on 2007-06-07 17:35 MDT -.- by scwizard on 2007-06-07 17:40 MDT Oh it's Portugal! Right? by scwizard on 2007-06-07 17:43 MDT Why don't I see your country's regionals here:
by scwizard on 2007-06-07 18:02 MDT Because the Portuguese regionals aren't covered by Wizards of the Coast is there a site that reports on them, and has the decklists of the top 8 etc? by RandomToni on 2007-06-07 18:39 MDT epa sidebordas um pouco naquela...lol o q vale e q o deck e automatico...lol by n1ck on 2007-06-08 03:25 MDT devir screws magic in Portugal by Chatzuk on 2007-06-08 04:34 MDT No decklists in any site. Sometimes Devir publishes them 2 or 3 months after the tournaments. I was the one playing teachings in that top8, so hi to all who where there. by TugaChampion on 2007-06-08 04:49 MDT yeah devir sucks. mas bogas o SB é muito importante! Muda completamente alguns maus match ups, solidifica outros, dá-te resposta a random worships e outras coisas chatas, etc. by RandomToni on 2007-06-08 21:25 MDT ya mas tb saber sidebord e mais importante do que ter um bom sidebord... enfim... o meu plano resultou por isso qualifiquei me... by Wiley on 2007-06-11 12:20 MDT hey ringman, remember that time I beat you with 300 card zoo, jajajajajja by TeMpErA on 2007-06-24 04:05 MDT ena pah.. q bandeira será esta q é metade vermelha metade verde.. estes amricanos..
