Extended PTQ Report: Gifts Rock *4th*

by SteveGoode

I recently (01-06-07) placed fourth at a put in Toronto, Ontario and I would like to take the time to share my experience with you. I ended up playing Gifts Rock played by PauloBra after being unable to get Aggro Rock or Boros to work for me at all on mws. I spent about two hours on Thursday night and feel comfortable enough with the deck to play it. The morning of the PTQ, I tested a match with my friend Kai, who was set on playing the green white deck Mike Flores built, he smashes me in consecutive games as I’m unable to draw anything but land. I ended up cutting one land for the third pernicious deed, and I finish up with this list:

4c Gifts Rock
Main Deck Sideboard
4 Windswept Heath
1 Godless Shrine
2 Polluted Delta
2 Forest
2 Swamp
1 Plains
1 Hallowed Fountain
1 Temple Garden
1 Llanowar Wastes
1 Breeding Pool
3 Overgrown Tomb
1 Watery Grave
3 Loxodon Hierarch
4 Pernicious Deed

1 Genesis
1 Ravenous Baloth
4 Birds of Paradise
3 Eternal Witness
3 Wall of Roots
3 Sakura-Tribe Elder
4 Duress
3 Living Wish
2 Putrefy
3 Cabal Therapy
3 Smother
3 Gifts Ungiven

1 Loxodon Hierarch
1 Ravenous Baloth
1 Cabal Therapy
1 Smother
1 Kami of Ancient Law
1 Blinkmoth Well
1 Meloku the Clouded Mirror
1 Withered Wretch
1 Cranial Extraction
1 Krosan Grip
1 Darkblast
2 Death Cloud
1 Kataki, War's Wage
1 Boseiju, Who Shelters All

The changes I did make from were to add two Death Clouds, Boseiju, and Blinkmoth Well to the sideboard, and I added a third deed maindeck. After registering my deck and drinking the Monster energy drink Mike Dio provided for me, I’m off to play the first round of seven that there will be today.

Round 1 Affinity:

After not really testing against any decks at all, I wasn't to sure how this match up would go. I do have pernicious deed, but that does me no good if Myr enforcer and Somber Hoverguards are on board.
Game 1: My opponent is playing first, and I keep a marginal hand with nothing really but mana accelerators in it. His first play of the match is Vault of the whispers, Arcbound worker. I go land bird go. My opponent then goes land arcbound work, frogmite. I go land go. He takes his turn plays out some other threats, and after realizing I’m probably too far behind, I scoop up this game only showing my opponent a hallowed fountain, breeding pool, and a forest.

Game 2 and 3 pretty much go the same way: I go land bird. He goes land worker. I go land wall of roots. He goes land plating. I go land living wish for Kataki and the game ends several turns later.

Round 2 Affinity:

Now even though I pulled out last match, I’m still no sure how good this match up really is for me. I’m not thrilled at all with this match up again to say the least but it is what it is so we are off to game one.

Game 1: Game one was pretty much a blur. My opponent gets a good affinity draw, and I’m left to wonder exactly why more people just don't play affinity.
Game 2: I keep a three-land, living wish, bird of paradise, wall of roots, smother draw. I go land bird. My opponent goes land Arcbound worker. I play the wall of roots and my opponent plays some guys on his turn. He doesn't tap out until about turn four or so which is when I take the opportunity to go living wish for Kataki. My opponent and I continue to play because fortunately for him he drew into triple blinkmoth nexus. The game goes long, and I eventually living wish for Meloku and overwhelm him with flying men.
Game 3: My opponent and I both get good draws this game, with me being able to stabilize after his initial onslaught. Time is called and with death cloud in my hand I come up four life short of killing him, so we draw.

Round 3 Affinity!!!!!!:

Three matches, three affinity decks. I still wasn't happy at this point when I found out what my opponent was playing.

Game 1: I go first and lead of with land birds of paradise. My opponent plays worker, Ornithopter. I go land sakura tribe elder. My opponent taps out plays ravager and a frogmite, and I sacrifice elder end of turn, getting a swamp. I take my turn play Pernicious Deed and blow the board up. He draws and scoops it up after not drawing a land.
Game 2: This game is just about as lopsided as game one. I win this game by playing out mana accelerators on the first two turns but missing my land on my third turn and casting sakura tribe elder. He trades with a guy on my turn I play death cloud for three going down to three and keeping a living wish. I draw a land cast living wish for kataki and the game ends shortly thereafter.

After this match imp, assured by a friend, said that this actually isn't that bad of a match up for me, which makes me feel a little better about the fact that I was 2-0-1. We go get something to eat then settle in for my round 4 opponent

Round 4 WUR Solution...Kris Kavanaugh:

This was a funny match for me. I don’t really remember anything about the match except for the fact my opponent was a bigger jerk than I was (my friends can agree with that). Not only did I beat him 2-0, but he complained about how much land he drew when I drew about the same. Then he complained that this is a really good match up for me. Now the deck is good, don't get me wrong, but counterbalance only has three spells that can counter a pernicious deed, and I also have hand disruption, which takes care of the little bit of removal or even the stifles they do have. Regardless of this I spend the whole match with my iPod on, ignoring my opponent.

Round 5 Aggro Rock..James Vance:

After playing against a jerk it was nice to play against James. He was friendly on top of the fact he played better than any of the opponents I played this far. No offense to any of them.  Had it not been a questionable call on a hand he kept game three he probably would have one this game. He did inform me as we start playing that he already knew what I was playing which gives him a slight edge game one at least

Game 1: He leads of with cabal therapy for pernicious deed, which hits. I play a bird and pass the turn back. He plays a dark confidant. While I just play a land and pass the turn. He plays a withered wretch and another therapy. This is where the game starts going down hill for me as I am forced to topdeck. I eventually deed his board, but I’m unable to draw a guy and I succumb to troll ascetic and a call token.
Game 2: My opponent starts off with dark confidant, which I smother. He eventually plays a chrome mox, imprinting a withered wretch and plays a troll ascetic. I cast Gifts Ungiven, getting an eternal witness, a death cloud, living wish a deed. He gives me genesis and eternal witness. I play eternal witness, getting back death cloud, which he therapy's away. I play a sakura-tribe elder and wall roots on my turn. He plays another troll ascetic. I choose not to sac elder and draw an eternal witness. I get back death cloud casting it for two, leaving him with a mox stuck on black and me with eternal witness. I beat him down for a couple of turns then he plays a call of the herd for an elephant token, which I smother. He cast another and next turn flashes another. I play a loxodon Hierarch then pass, and he flashes another call of the herd. I smother one of them then pass the turn he plays a call of the herd again. I draw play pernicious deed for zero and attack for the win.
Game 3: This is where he messes up. He keeps a one land hand with double cabal therapy. He cast the first one naming bird of paradise and hits. I draw play a swamp and duress taking the second therapy. He misses his next few land drops while I develop my board. He cast two confidants, which I end up casting Smother and Darkblast on, and he’s unable to ever draw a third land, so I win.

Round 6 UGR threshold... Noah Long:

Game 1: My opponent plays first and plays and untapped steam vents. I play land duress taking a counterspell and seeing a Blastminer in his hand! He cast blastminer on turn two. I top deck a fetch land, he blows up my overgrown tomb, I play a second fetch land. He passes. I play godless shrine untapped. He attempts to blow it up, but I putrefy his guy in response. I still lose my land, buy at least that guy is gone. He plays a Werebear, and I cast Loxodon Hierarch. He untaps and plays a second Werebear. Now this is a play someone actually thought I did incorrectly. I have five lands untapped and a land in my hand. Instead of me playing my land then casting genesis, I choose to let him counter it with his force spike allowing me to get it in my graveyard since I have drawn no cabal therapies at this time. I was planning on trading with his Werebears at this time and just start bringing back hierarch; that changes when I eventually draw pernicious deed and deed his guys away. I then cast living wish for Meloku, and the game ends shortly after that.

Game 2: Game two is pretty much the same as game one, except I see a nimble mongoose and never see what my opponent is actually playing. He does have sudden shock, though I win again on the back of Meloku.

Round 7 U/W Azoritron: ID

So I end the swiss with a 5-0-2 record and am pretty happy with the way the deck had actually played. I was fortunate though to play most like aggro decks all day so that my have something to do with that. The top 8 consists of: one Gifts rock, one Aggro Rock (my round five opponent), one UW Azoritron,  one Affinity, one BGR flow rock, one UWR Solution (my round four opponent), Mono red storm goblins, one Dirty Kitty( fellow Buffalo, NY native).

Top 8: Mono red Goblins

These games were both pretty fast

Game 1: He goes off earlier, and I eventually stabilize the board at about four life. I play a hierarch then a Baloth in consecutive turns, but am not able to attack. I eventually living wish for meloku and start attacking. He burning wishes for BREAKING POINT, and I choose to take six, going to two but he taps all four of his red sources and is unable to sac a barbarian ring to kill me. He wasn't aware of my Ravenous Baloth I assume because he couldn't have killed me there anyways.

Game 2: This game is similar to game one, but this time I stabilize with pernicious deed. I follow that up with Loxodon Hierarch then a living wish on Meloku and we are off to the top four.

Top 4 Gary Mienl Dirty Kitty Goblins

Game 1: This game was uneventful as he mulligans down to five and I therapy some cards from his hand. He does eventually go off, but without fecundity he is unable to kill me due to pernicious deed and hierarchs.
Game 2: This game leaves a bad taste in my mouth. My friend Mike Dio and I still argue about what was the correct play I should have made involving a cranial extraction. He is able to go off earlier this game with guys no Empty the Warrens. I’m able to stabilize on the back of deed and darkblast. I eventually draw a cranial extraction naming empty the warrens (he did have three or four cards at this point and they were all spells). I’m assuming Gary drew into the grapeshot on his turn because he finally decided to play his skirk prospector and fecundity in his hand. He draws a bunch of cards and grapeshot's me for fourteen. I assume he did draw into the grapeshot because he had fecundity and skirk prospector in hand a couple of turns earlier when he flashed back cabal therapy. My thinking was that even if he does play both there were enough guys left in his deck to sack to prospector to win the game he had about thirteen guys left in his deck of about 35 to 40 cards but I guess he did because he kept drawing guys. To be fair though had he played this game better he would have won it without the grape shot.
Game 3: I draw nothing but land and lose this game only, casting a cranial extraction for empty the warrens. This is another game he could have one a turn earlier instead of giving me a chance to draw a pernicious deed. He cast rite of flame for with a second goblin warchief and a second goblin matron in his hand. Instead of playing the second warchief then casting the matron for one mana then casting the pile driver he got with the last untap land he has. He chooses to use the mana to just play the matron and the piledriver.

Gary ends up losing next round to the solution deck, which really burned me up because that was a match I felt I could have won. I am happy with the 6-1-2 record, but I probably wouldn't play this deck again even though it did well. I do like the death clouds in the deck as they were good against aggro decks but were really in there for the control match ups. I would also cut the boseiju if were to play this deck again. Well, I hope this article was okay. I just worked a nine hour shift at work and was pushed into writing this article by the legendary Mike Dio. I’m also glad I won’t have to play Kris Kavanagh anymore this season.  I hate when players whine about games they lost for themselves and though he was nicer after the match he could be overheard bad mouthing me and was almost beaten up by a guy about 5'5 140lbs. Good luck to everyone the rest of the extended season, and I hope this article was semi-enjoyable.

It is only 56 cards or no?

by snoopster on 2007-01-11 13:15 MDT

fine article, but the grammar was horrendous.

by MakeMeDevil on 2007-01-11 13:26 MDT

The only that i ve to say is:

I Love Exalted angels.

by caesarthehun on 2007-01-11 13:46 MDT

yeh definitely 56 cards...

by aggroking on 2007-01-11 13:57 MDT

nice article, enjoed to read it.

by PaUl0_BRA on 2007-01-11 14:15 MDT

OMG, Its my gifts rock 1.0, and this deck is really crap...anyway, good article, congratz!

by Narya on 2007-01-11 14:25 MDT

i believe it is missing 4 deeds

by _mtgros_ on 2007-01-11 14:26 MDT

the 4 cards missing I suppose are pernicious deeds

by kendiggy on 2007-01-11 16:12 MDT

Represent Buffalo!!!!

sup steve! Yeah, I heard you top-8'd that ptq. Aww, you broke your cherry! lol! Congrats anyways. I can't believe you lost to Gary Meinl in the top 8. Goblins must love Gary. (for the outsiders, Gary won an 864-man regionals three years ago with Goblin Bidding riding the back of lady luck) He still has my Tangle Wires I let him borrow like two years ago, that bastard. Well, good luck with the rest of the PTQ season steve and catch me in IRC if you can. Tell everyone from buffalo I said what's up!

by Spyx on 2007-01-11 16:23 MDT

he said he played 3 deeds main

by kikimikejiki on 2007-01-11 17:49 MDT

lol u played noah long what a fag i was going to go to that ptq

by Vodka_drink on 2007-01-11 20:07 MDT

haha...

Kris Kavanaugh is my buddy...and he won did he not?

so the fact that hes a "jerk" should make that much od a difference now does it?

and they cheered when you lost top 4 cause they didnt want to face you

Good job on the top 4

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-11 20:43 MDT

I wrote this article at 3:00am and had to work at 7:30am. The deck actually doesnt suck unless your completely bad. The decklist was running 3 pernicious deed and there is suppose to be an island main. For the most part the only thing i would change about the deck is make it 4 pernicious deed main and cut the Boseiju, and the smother for possibly 2 orim's chants against the goblin deck. Sorry about the grammar though...

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-11 20:48 MDT

Yes Kenny...I broke a slump I should have a long long time ago. lol!! Gary is lucky but he's a good guy atleast I didnt lose to the Kris kid!!!

by CartyCart on 2007-01-11 21:03 MDT

no vindicate?
no sb witness?
no Plow under?
no global ruin to give you a shot in the tron match?
You complain about flood with over 30 mana sources in your deck and only 3 gifts, you probably deserve it. :p

by twndomn on 2007-01-11 21:24 MDT

This version doesn't need vindicate/plow under. It has death cloud. Yes, 1 global ruin might not hurt to put it in the SB, should test out the correct number of combination for death cloud/global ruin.

Since your meta is filled with affinity and goblin, I am surprised that there's no Ritual Desire.

Why would Mono-red goblin run burning wish? That's not the most comeptitive build I have seen.

Actually, if you look at MTGO or ML, WURsolution wins many games/local tourna., in terms of win percentage. If WUR manages to do: turn 2 MM on putrefy, turn 3 TM for needle on deed. That would put your version of rock in a difficult situation, would it not?

by WiCkEdWiZaRd on 2007-01-11 21:31 MDT

yeah because every one gets that start and he doesnt run smother either.

by CartyCart on 2007-01-11 21:52 MDT

How can you say gifts rock doesn't need vindicate?
Plow under is an acceptable loss, but i am sure at least one vindicate would be better then a smother.

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-11 21:55 MDT

The 1 global ruins might be good, and though I tried to fit witness in the board (it was the 16th card i cut) i never once wanted wish for him at any point in any game. I never complained about being flooded and if you havent noticed i run 21 land 6 being fetch lands. This was a deck i defaulted to with no practice because i didnt like any of the other decks and didnt want to face mirror matches all day.

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-11 22:02 MDT

Vindicate would only be good if i was playing a land screwed opponent or tron. It doesnt stop chant at instant speed(putrefy does) and its not a surprise since its a sorcery, also the slight possiblity that my opponent is playing welding jar in affinity makes putrefy better as well. All the ritual desire decks hated themselves out same with boros. I actually wished that i would have had a way to wish for a creature that kills creatures and a harmonic sliver over kami of ancient law.

by yavin1 on 2007-01-11 22:27 MDT

nice article i love any rock variants. too bad no first. Also, i would think that jontun grunt would be better in SB than wretch, how'd that work out for you?

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-11 22:51 MDT

Withered wretch was always bad. Grunt would have been nice as a beater though

by SpareSocks on 2007-01-12 00:28 MDT

I wish i could play a bunch of good matchups and then get a draw against the one bad one ;)

by aggroking on 2007-01-12 01:39 MDT

is kris kavanaugh kris with a k from ml?

by Holzi on 2007-01-12 03:55 MDT

Hey, nice report!

I also wanted to run Gifts Rock on the PTQs..
Maybe it is a real good choice...

by _SeBaS_ on 2007-01-12 08:25 MDT

who won? uw tron?????tell me steve

by WoodSage on 2007-01-12 09:08 MDT

I played in that PTQ and didn´t see any aggro or combo decks :( just endless control mirrors and T&N.

I think Kris Kavanaugh won with Trinket Angel.

I saw some Ichorid, Psychatog, Affinity and UW Tron on the top tables before I dropped, what happened to them?

by twodioz on 2007-01-12 19:37 MDT

Nice article steve. I cant find a game in Ecuador on this trip.

To answer Woodsage:

The psychatog, affinity and uw tron lost to the goblins and got drawn out. I think one 5-2 made the top 8.

And just so everyone knows Kris Kavenaugh didnt even play his top 4 match. The person he played did some shady stuff and all of the sudden with no match played Kris won.

The jury is out on that one. I stayed fro the top 8 and all I can say is atleast the people from Buffalo didnt do the same thing.

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-12 21:26 MDT

Trinket Angel did win. The player playing u/w tron probably would have lost to me. I sat next to him 3 times that day and watched him play the deck terrible, he was a cool guy though. Last time a checked i did run death cloud which isnt bad against control, also my 4 duress and 3 cabal therapy are better than his condescend and memory lapse also i do run boseiju in the board to poor out good death clouds just have to set up. But what do I know sparesocks is obviously a pro.

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-12 21:29 MDT

twodioz!!! My man mike that sucks you cant find a game there you like that decklist for that standard deck i sent you??

by kendiggy on 2007-01-13 11:56 MDT

OMG! twodioz! I can't believe I didn't catch that! What's up Mike!!!! haven't seen you in a while! I don't think Equadorians are very good magic players... lol!

by Vodka_drink on 2007-01-13 19:32 MDT

yes my buddy kris won...you know the asshole...

and know kris says "magic-league is a waste of my time" so he plays MTGO

and for the record...i buildt his deck for him an hour before the torny started... so yes...he did play the deck horrible but he won

vodka

by TylerTMK on 2007-01-14 07:39 MDT

Congrats You weren't sure if affinity was a good or bad matchup? Gifts Rock is probably the worse thing any affinity deck wants to see across from them.

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-14 11:15 MDT

Vodka thats nice that you did that for him, and yes he played the deck horribly but i had no practice with my deck except for the 2 games i played with my friend Kai in which i was land flooded. So you building it for him an hour before the tournament means nothing if his playskills are horrible. I have a mtgo account so whats his name so if i see him in any tournaments i can smash him on there too.

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-14 11:17 MDT

I didnt know that honestly TylerTmk. My first 2 rounds against affinity they smoked me game 1.

by twodioz on 2007-01-14 15:19 MDT

Yeah steve, but after you did ok, you felt better about them. If you played the deck again, you wouldn`t tie the round I think.

Anyway, what are you thinking of playing for Dallas (if you`re still in)?

I`ll be back tomorrow to start the testing.

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-14 15:54 MDT

Probably looking to play the TEPS or Gaea's Zoo. Boros with green sounds good too. Im glad you will be back Ive been slacking on City Champs

by Eldar on 2007-01-16 07:37 MDT

Affinity can be gift rocks worst nightmare if they are MDing pithing needle on deed because the deck has a real hard time winning vs affinity without at least an early deed. However if the deed comes up unneedled and your hand doesn't suck completely the game should pretty much be a lock for you if you don't make any drastic mistakes. Anyway congratz steve and great article. Also if you find out anything else about that goblin deck running burning wish perhaps a list it peaked my curiosity. Rogue builds ftw?

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-16 09:00 MDT

THanks Eldar. I hope they send in the decklist for my ptq so we can see the list. If not i will keep an eye out for the deck for you.

by SpareSocks on 2007-01-31 09:23 MDT

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-16 08:00 PST
Last time a checked i did run death cloud which isnt bad against control, also my 4 duress and 3 cabal therapy are better than his condescend and memory lapse also i do run boseiju in the board to poor out good death clouds just have to set up. But what do I know sparesocks is obviously a pro.

Everything in your deck is slow and clunky you need super disruption draw or they will just counter your 4cc card with a 2cc card. Doesn't seem great for you. And even if you do therapy/duress you will have to decide to hit their FOF/TFK either way everything they have is good against you. They also have mindslaver which can absolutely rape you.
Also, you say you didn't include witness in the board because you never wanted to wish for it, then say you only played two games with the deck?

by SteveGoode on 2007-01-31 22:26 MDT

Thats correct 2 games. And since ive had this deck built and testing with my friends and online i still havent lost a single match to the tron deck. Plus its not very good. Also i played an entire PTQ with the deck and still have not added to the deck. I attend on playing it at GP Dallas. Also last time check death cloud says you discard cards and sac lands so if they draw really well after the death cloud i guess they should win. IF im ever on in the chat room message me and we cant test the match up as much as you want

by CartyCart on 2007-02-01 08:26 MDT

There is a reason gifts rock is barely played on modo now.

by SteveGoode on 2007-02-01 21:44 MDT

Well im not really gonna argue with if the deck is good or not. Im assuming if its not getting played alot people dont know how to play against its bad matchups. Im forutnate to live in an area(buffalo, Ny) where we have a large degree of talented players, all the way down the the fnm players. When i do test with them and i do well with the deck, it speaks on my playskills and my ability to identify what i need to win against each match up. It is the only deck i attend on playing in the ptq season, and i do attend on winning one of the next two PTQ's i attend with the deck. I know how to play the deck try testing with one deck, such as the gifts rock deck, then get back to me.

by CartyCart on 2007-02-02 05:32 MDT

Thanks i really don't need you lecturing me, i don't know if you were responding to me or the guy above me or both but, personally i think you overestimate yourself and many players online are obviously much better then you and there are many people in my clan who had played giftsrock to great success until UW tron came on the seen and they stopped playing it because of the horrible matchup, i don't know what makes you think your version is magicly better when you lack the cards that gave it a chance.
And if you're winning against tron i guess the people you play with aren't very good :/
Also, it's "intend" , not attend.

by twodioz on 2007-02-02 09:56 MDT

Wow, it's become a grammer competition in the forum. Steve you have to start proof reading or you will get lectured by posters.

Anyway, I'm glad that people turned this post into an insult slinging match, where people act like little kids.

Good job guys, keep it up (sarcasm). It's annoying.

Kendiggy, if you still read this, send me a message. I might be coming your way later this month for the PTQ.

Steve, you're going to miss out if you don't go. You can have another chance to defend yourself in a unbiased forum (the PTQ itself).

by SteveGoode on 2007-02-02 15:56 MDT

Your right Dio. I should try to get that weekend off. If i hit my quota by then, I will certainly be attending the ptq in Boston. I guess i will have to let talent speak for itself. CARTYCART I WILL PLAY ANYONE IN YOUR CLAN WHETHER IT IS REAL LIFE OR ONLINE WITH UW TRON AND I WILL CERTAINLY BEAT THEM. MAYBE YOU ALL DONT KNOW HOW TO PLAY GIFT ROCKS "WORST" MATCH UP.

by CartyCart on 2007-02-04 13:59 MDT

Yeah we UMK are sooooo bad. Talk to Trunks123 about it, he is a master of gifts rock.

by Splattt on 2007-02-08 18:29 MDT

terrible grammar.. did you even read over this? you simply leave out words in some sentences and they make no sense

your match up analysis was completely useless because all you say is "i forgot what happened" or "this round was a blur" if your going to write an article (thats not a terrible smelly turd) try actually remembering what you did or take notes

how do you go to time against affinity??.. wow.. massive slow play or something

death cloud?.. wtf

sounds like you had no clue what you were doing picked up a random deck and made unnecessary changes and luck sacked into a T8 (a deck with access to both deed and kataki somehow managing pairing against affinity 3 rounds in a row..? how could you not T8)

"Game 3: I draw nothing but land and lose this game only, casting a cranial extraction for empty the warrens."

uh.. your playing against goblins and you keep a hand with nothing but land? i mean your even on the draw.. why didn't you mulligan?

by SteveGoode on 2007-02-08 21:35 MDT

I've already stated three times that if all you pro tour players on here(splattt, CartyCart)can challenge me to league matches when im in the chatroom. Your more than likely not gonna win. I wrote the report at 3am. You all can tell me how bad I am when i top 8 GP Dallas
