Endgame: Magic-League 2006

by Gerrardfo

And soon enough it will be 2007, so it’s time for another wrap-up article. To kick this article off, I will address an issue I’ve been having with submitted articles. There are many mistakes I commonly find, so I’ve written a short segment about them.

Grammar Grab Bag

Subject/Verb Agreement

If the subject of a sentence is singular, the verb must be singular. The same holds true for plural subjects and verbs. For example:

-The artist paints with brushes.
-The artists paint with brushes.

Pronoun Agreement

A pronoun is any word that can take the place of another noun (I, him, her, it, etc). Each of these words must agree with the antecedent (noun it replaces). This means that the singular pronoun and plural pronoun need a singular and plural pronoun respectively.

Parallel Structure

You have to be consistent when:
1) Choosing a subject (you, one)
2) Creating a list (infinitive form versus –ing form)
3) Making comparisons (compare one thing with another version of that thing)

Who/Which/That

The word “who” refers to people, while the words “which” and “that” refer to things.

Between/Among

Between is for two things and among is for three or more things.

Magic-League In Review

As for chronicling the past few months on Magic-League, I’ve decided to summarize rather than go month-by-month. I’ll highlight the major points of the six-month period from my perspective, which might encompass events that other people do not know of or do not remember. I’ll start with the league-related milestones.

I don’t think I can begin without mentioning that the Judge test was successfully (note successfully) reset in September. We’ve had hundreds of applicants who have had varying scores. For the people who pass, congratulations. For those who have failed, the test reset will be in January.

I probably will not be able to finish this article without mentioning the article contest changes. We changed the submission time to three months to award prizes for first, second, and third place participants. No, this piece is not eligible for prizes (nor do I believe it would win anything). However, that does not stop me from using the coolest M:tG promo pictures I could find to decorate the article. The switch in contest policy should bring him more entries (I pray) and encourage writers to take a shot.

Staff also posted a new flips policy. Under the new policy, you cannot offer flips for trivial reasons (“I had to go,” “We’re friends, high five!”) or for team purposes. This rule generated a huge debate on the forums for a week, but since then it has not had much opposition. Neo is keeping track of matches, so he’s making sure nothing slips through the cracks.

Koen declared that Magic Workstation was the new program of choice for Magic-League within the past couple weeks. MWS produces fewer flips (by overprotective firewalls/router issues) and became the most-used program on the league for all non-limited formats. We’ve had large tournaments since the switch, so I suppose that is an indicator that the league didn’t fall to pieces over the decision.

Moreover, our mini count increased with the introduction of the Judge Reward system in August. Laplie’s idea has sparked months in which certain judges have run over one-hundred minis. Rodry won the inaugural month competition by TCing 99 minis, which was thought to be insane at that time. However, in December, DS_McWerp and Pollo each broke the 100 mark and then still kept going in a race to capture the prize. Clearly the attraction of victory is helping the league provide more minis for the players.

During the last few days of November nico appointed niknight and Shyft- as the two new judge managers to replace LordHawk and fill in for the usually-absent Wildcard (job) and Djinn (school). These two candidates were the best-suited for the job due to longevity, commitment, and time zones. It just shows that dedication and work can get you to the top, in addition to strength of character (and shear awesomeness).

While Magic-League has had its fair share of big events throughout the last couple of months, I’ve also achieved noteworthy accomplishments. During the later part of summer I made +a in league channels, which meant a lot to me after months of site work. In September I rewrote some of the site guides to accommodate changes in policy/opinion. I completed another master or two, which leaves me as the judge with the highest master count of 2006. I also have over forty trials under my belt for this year, including two or three on DCI-r (site problems). Other judges who came close were CMA-Flippi with 26 trials, Pollo with 20 trials, and Teknolink with 16 trials. Finally, in late November I became a server helpop.

Last year’s wrap-up article had a small poll section, so it’s time to mirror that portion with another survey.

1. What was the best thing to happen to magic-league in all of 2006?
<Wiley> I joined.
<Craze> PV making t8 in Worlds among with Mono White Tron. ML proved a good place for testing out new sets. w00t PV
<Revik> switch to mws
<darksigma> The success of Pv (and his support of m-l), the switch to mws, and the increasing of prizes
<therooster> Making MWS the program of choice.
<VonDouche> The addition of Shyft- and niknight to judge management
<tato-> ehmm...the trials and masters.
<sgtpepper87> The MWS/Appr Program switch
<RiQuS|P-> Making MWS it's standard program to use, PV's great performance @ Worlds, me becoming judge and joining #5-beggars (now known as -1)
<mexagirl> Well I wasn´t here the hole time, but I am pretty sure it was my acceptance as a judge ;D. The staff sure was in need of a female touch ;D
<Malhavoc> I think the recent switch to MWS is really good: cheating was something dangerous to the league, and I even think many players/judges used to take unfair advantages from the "flip" results. With MWS, flips are something which should almost disappear.
<CMA-Flippi> Other format trials, namely Rainbow Stairwell, Tribal, BYOB.
<TG> i don't know, i think the top 8 in worlds for PV =)
<Alucart> having PV represent the league at worlds..
<Pete278> The best thing to happen to magic-league was, of course, Magic Workstation's victory of the vile scourge of Apprentice. Many children everywhere will be able to play Magic over the internet for free on a good program for years to come now.
<Dapug> Judge rewards
<Eliminator> Eliminator finally winning a trial and second-placing a master.

2. Were you happy with magic-league overall this year? Why/why not?
<Wiley> No because I got banned like six times.  And not enough sealed minis were made.
<Craze> No, I think the staff made alot of controversial descisions that I don't agree with. More then usual. Kinda changed ML this year and not for the better imo.
<Revik> yes
<darksigma> At first, I wasnt because i had some problems with some judge staff (like lordhawk) because of the judge test, but finally im feeling comfortable again here thanks to the work of the staff (im starting to even appreciate GFO)
<therooster> Yes. Everything is going great IMO.
<VonDouche> No, they seem to be angling toward 1 type of player
<tato-> Yes because I didnt have any problem with stuff members or with players. It's a very "united" league.
<sgtpepper87> Yes, i was, mainly because of more minis than in the past. (That was at least my impression)
<RiQuS|P-> I only played the last Quarter, so I don't know all the stuff. I am quite pleased with magic-league, making me a judge and allowing me to make my own mini's @ European times.
<mexagirl> Again, I can’t compare it to the years be4, but I was. It’s a fun place to practice at. It’s pretty well organized for a no-fund league.
<Malhavoc> This is my first year in the league: I decided to join cause even at first glance, compared to the other league, there are some T1 tournaments around here, and that's the only format I seriously play. I did the judge test as soon as possible, passed it, and since then I'm feeling fine (before that it was quite hard to find T1 events for me).
<TG> yes by masters =)
<Alucart> yes, because it seems to get more mature each year.. imo
<Pete278> I wasn't in the middle part of the year, unlike the beginning and the end, for reasons I can't remember, but I remember it perking up when I found out about the extended ptq season. And then it perked up some more when mws took over, obv.
<Dapug> Yes, the number of minis has greatly increased.
<Eliminator> Yes, I haven't had that many problems, and Magic-League is a fun place to hang out.

3. Do you think the staff of magic-league (judges, admins, etc) did a good job? Why/why not?
<Wiley> No because I got banned like six times.  And not enough sealed minis were made.
<Craze> Judges did an awsome job. The mini numbers soared and even now we have 2 judges going into the triple digits to see who can get the most minis. Very good for players.
<Revik>every ruling i asked about was answered quickly and accurately
<darksigma> Yes, I think they did a pretty good job running the league (if you discount the incident with lordhawk :/ )
<therooster> Everyone is doing a great job. I've seen very few major issues.
<VonDouche> for the most part yes. Alot of shit happened this year
<tato-> Yes cause I'm one of them :P
<sgtpepper87> Yes, because they ran billions of minis
<RiQuS|P-> Yes, it's mostly volunteer jobs, so they do a great job. Sometimes Masters tend to become a mess, but Kaesh did a very good job with the christmas invitational.
<mexagirl> I admire the altruism of the administrators of this site and I think they did an excelent job. I know it takes a lot of work to keep it going, and most of the users don´t really keep that in mind (most of them are kids, anyway). about judges, judging isn´t as easy as I thought. Now that I am one, I realize why judges take so long to answer sometimes. There were a few rulings I didnt agree with when I was just a player. Sometimes, some judges are a bit arrogant, sometimes some judges jump into rulings they shouldn’t, but overall they do a good job I think. Their effort is underestimated too.
<Malhavoc> I have a general good overview of the staff, at least according to my direct experience, but I have to admit I've heard many players complaining about judges being unfair and trying to help one another against common players. I don't know if that's true, after all I think there are surely more lame players than lame judges, and without proves there is very little to say. However, browsing the charts, I've seen many judges staying on top of the charts with a lot of "flipped" matches. I have to admit that seems REALLY suspicious. Myself, during my very first tournament here on the site, I was asked by the TC I had beaten to flip the match. At the time I did not really realized what that meant, but seeing it now that would have been a reason for a many-months dejudge penalty. I think we should keep a very close eyes on judges like those; but hopefully, without Apprentice, flipped matches will become even MORE suspicious (they should not even exist: in MWS you can ALWAYS connect, unless ALL servers are down).
<CMA-Flippi> I think the j2's made a very good job xD, some j1's weren't active enough i think, where activity in this case has to be understood as being active in #judges4you, not actively running minis.
<TG> yes pollo FTW is the best judge-staff in m-l ;)
<Alucart> we are trying to be good.. i think if there is some more lvl2s + on it would help with some of the commotions that occurs irregularily but do frequent the channels
<Pete278> Yeah, they did a good job, EXCEPT for every single time I got banned for spam. Its not spam, its meaningful conversation, damnit.
<Dapug> Judges were great, but it seems those who have the most authority in the league are the least active.
<Eliminator> The only issue I have with the staff is J2s not being available whenever I need them.

4. What would you like to see out of the league in the future?
<Wiley> More sealed minis.
<Craze> New site remake Lamex is working on and a team department upgrade. I saw Alex's idea for the ladder system a long while ago, I really wish it would be put into play.
<Revik> dunno...maybe speedier resets of the j1 test
<darksigma> the version 1.0 of mws, but i know this does not depends on m-l
<therooster> More "big" tournaments. Even with a small cash prize, it'd bring even more interest.
<VonDouche> more skill; a lot of players come to M-L to learn, we need more teachers and less assholes who complain about a new player
<tato-> Maybe 2HG minis xD and maybe a composite ranking.
<sgtpepper87> more women!!!! j/k i want free flights to pro tours sponsered by the league
<RiQuS|P-> In #Judges4You, there should be more active LVL 2 or higher judges. Many times, LVL 1 judges have a problem they cant fix and need to wait ages for a J2 to appear. Second, I hope I don't get dejudged for some foolishness ^^.
<mexagirl> I think some tournament rules need tuning - namely connection problems (will gladly discuss it if anyone is interested). Am expecting a program that´ll suport multiplayer games :P. Know any good programer ;D?
<Malhavoc> I like masters (and the swiss tournaments in particular), but they take too much time. I would really like to see some swiss tournament made across the week(s): you can schedule the games with your opponents and report the matches when finished. This will make swiss tournaments more playable to those short on time. Such tournament style sure opens to many problematics, but I'm experiencing such things on my site where we play NetRunner on MWS: most of the players are grown up and do not have so much time to play, so playing each round along several days does the trick. Ah, another thing I find senseless: the way teams work. They just give points to those who play, rather than those who win: if you play a lot, you will be on top. I'm sure that the team charts would be more or less the same switching "games won" with "games played". It should be something more similar to the personal scores: losses NEED to matter, otherwise those who can't stay online all the time (those with a life, someone would say ;) ) simply have no reason to participate in a team: they will always stay in the lower parts of the chart.
<CMA-Flippi> Concentration/development on/of one of the many new programs and have one program finished (call it Hawken, Go or just Apprentice 2.).
<TG> well mm.. maybe all with mws =) and a netdraft with pics xD
<Alucart> a greater system of control for verbal abusers
<Pete278> More pro players, but not the kind who never mention magic-league. And more prize money. Mostly prize money.
<Dapug> More judges and faster resetting of judge test.
<Eliminator> More J2s. People keep ditching my draft minis after they fill and I have to resort to non-playing filler because there's no available J2.

5. Who was Magic-League’s best player for 2006?
<Wiley> Well PV duh. This is going to be pretty unanimous.
<Craze> PV. dboy1 did pretty good to this year.
<Revik> PV
<darksigma> I think PV because his success IRL benefit m-l, if we only take into account the result at m-l, I think Pollo earns that honor.
<therooster>TylerTMK
<VonDouche> Kale
<tato-> PV for the t8 at worlds but taking into account the activity and the entusiasm, Pollo.
<sgtpepper87> Ronnan
<RiQuS|P-> Pollo, hands off.
<mexagirl> To be honest, I have no idea :S.
<Malhavoc> Those who are first in the charts?
<CMA-Flippi> Paolo Vitor and aggroking
<TG> PV
<Alucart> PV.. and errr.. Pg
<Pete278> I'll probably end up regret saying this, but I believe that Tidus13 was the best player on magic-league this year. I don't know why, I just have this feeling this he is. Never doubt my opinions.
<Dapug> PV outside of the league, but Pollo did the best in M-L tournaments.
<Eliminator> I don't know, but I can tell you it wasn't me.

6. What formats do you want to see added to trials/minis?
<Wiley> Sealed, and maybe Byot2, that seems cool.
<Craze> Chaos. More other formats anyway. I feel they'd get more hits if more trials were other. Remember the Rainbow Stairway trials? We had soo many other minis that month, it was pretty sweet.
<Revik> prismatic
<darksigma> The formats I would love to see are impossible to run on app or mws, like 2 headed giant (for pt) or some draft (horrendous to run @ netdraft)
<therooster> As long as the trials (and larger tournaments) follow the PTQ seasons, Im pretty happy. It helps ML mimic the real life, as well as provide for a good place to practice. I dislike seeing a lot of minis forming for mostly-irrelevant formats (TSB when only one set in the block is out). Here and there is fine, but 4 in a row seems silly.
<VonDouche> more apprentice, but I miss byob, would like to see a lot more of it
<tato-> 2HG, Singleton.
<sgtpepper87> none, it's good as it is with t2, sealed, ext, t1.5 and t1
<RiQuS|P-> It's good like this, 2HG would be nice, but not possible :)
<mexagirl> I only really like limited, so I would like sealed trials to happen more often. there could be Draft trials (hard to organize, I know, but not impossible!)
<Malhavoc> More Vintage! Well, apart that, I really like Highlander.
<CMA-Flippi> More drafts, maybe one draft master ( i know, organization is difficult)
<TG> nah just sealed decks (mws) t2 and ext
<Alucart> Block party? or maybe random set seals
<Pete278>  I'd like to see some kind of Unreal Tournament format, where you still gain and lose magic rating, but you play Unreal Tournament, not Magic. Or some kind of new format where you don't lose the game for having 0 or less life. More seriously, I'd like to see more of a following for byot2 on mws.
<Dapug> More diversity, more eternal trials and fewer sealed.
<Eliminator> I would like to see the Lightning Round draft format catch on, it's a very demanding format.

7. Will 2007 be good to Magic-League?
<Wiley> Maybe
<Craze> Depends on the changes that are made. I'd like to hope so, though.
<Revik> definately, why wouldnt it?
<darksigma> I hope so
<therooster> Yes
<VonDouche> assuming Nico keeps a level head, then yes M-L will continue to grow. “The key for m-l is to keep on rolling forward”
<tato-> I hope so.
<sgtpepper87> i hope so! but i think yes
<RiQuS|P-> I sure do hope so!
<mexagirl> ermm I think so. I hope so. Why wouldn’t it?
<Malhavoc> Time will tell. Hope the new site will go online soon!
<CMA-Flippi> I hope so, at least. I’m sure there will be more and better players to play with, but also more (competitive) judges to ask questions or play in their tournaments.
<TG> i dont know, i want keep playing here =)
<Alucart> I see a potential for alot of new comers to boost the popularity of ML but also predict alot of conflict
<Pete278> As long as I stay here, yes.
<Dapug> Probably, especially if judge rewards continue.
<Eliminator> Magic-League keeps getting better each year, so I predict 2007 will build on all the good things 2006 brought us.

8. Were you happy with the program (MWS/apprentice) switch?
<Wiley> NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
<Craze> No. Stupid decision. The league totally swears it didn't cut down apprentice, but it did being as it limited apprentice's potential.
<Revik> er…see answer #1
<darksigma> Yes.
<therooster> Yes
<VonDouche> yes and no
<tato-> I don't care, I play in both and make minis in both.
<sgtpepper87> YES, definatly, it was one of the best things the staff ever decided
<RiQuS|P-> Yes, I'm not able to connect with Apprentice and MWS never lets me down (well thats a lie, but the program always works..)
<mexagirl> Personally, not really. My PC doesn´t suport mws :S I´ve been trying to install it. I will manage to do it, eventually :S But since MWS has less bugs and better graphics I don´t see why not do that change.
<Malhavoc> Of course! I think it's something which should have happened already in the past. Of course, that did not happen cause many players tend to stick with what they used to play with, even if it's something worst. Sometimes, like parents, we need to tell them what's better for them
<CMA-Flippi> I don’t think it changed that much except the attention has brought more closely to the MWS disconnection problems.
<TG> yeh i lov mws. apprentice is good, i dont hate this but the problem is with the cheaters =/
<Alucart> not really.. as i believe MWS is kinda buggy where appr is just very very abusable
<Pete278> Read the answer to question 1, and then decide what I think.
<Dapug> Didn't really effect me, but it made some people upset and felt unnecessary.
<Eliminator> I don't really care, since I play mostly in drafts. I don't have a problem with MWS.

I’ll keep my own answers brief. The best thing to happen to magic-league in 2007 was that staff changed enough policies to do away with problematic old systems. I was happy with magic-league this year because a lot of hard work yielded good results in the form of participation and site-fixing. I’d probably be partial to number three, and in the future I’d like to see the release of some programs that are in development. PV would capture the in real life player prize, and Pollo would get a consolation prize for reigning online-champion. I’d love to see a 2hg or Momir Basic trial in 2007 or even 2008; I can wait. 2007 will hopefully be great to magic-league, and I was content with the program switch.

I also made some predictions last year that I want to evaluate.

Guess 1: We finally do something about the Apprentice/MWS shuffler

Result: Apprentice will most likely not receive an update anytime soon. However, MWS has some new upcoming versions with bug fixes that might make it “more bearable” for the people who complain about it. There are other Magic: the Gathering programs coming out in versions that are possibly viable for league play. I do not wish to release any expected dates regarding the release because the programmers should take their time. Remember: you never rush a masterpiece.

Guess 2: More involvement of the team system

Result: The suggested team ladder didn’t go anywhere because it wasn’t on the to-do list for active league staff. In the far future we will hopefully have an updated system, but right now we have a fine system. However, one feature that is being pushed for is only having the points of active members count toward the team total.

Guess 3: Another magic-league player will top 8 a PT and rarely come back

Result: PV did make the cutoff for two PTs, and he is often chatting online. This feat of staying with the league, as nico says, shows PV’s character. We have a dedicated pro who is a valuable member of the magic-league community.

With three ideas down the drain, I’d like to pose three more guesses as for what will happen in 2007.

1) We introduce another program for Magic: the Gathering successfully (at some random point in the year)
2) We find a way to encompass some fun formats we’ve always wanted to play on Magic-League
3) An ode to Magic-League becoming larger

Props:
-The people who filled out the survey
-Maryland magic-players
-Programmers/scripters who have helped magic-league
-Some special people in my life

Slops:
-Discussions about virginity that I get drafted into involuntarily
-Sickness
-Long nights
-My imagination for strangling snuggly puppies when I wasn’t looking.

Staff does what it can to keep the league running. And with that, Happy New Year to all and may 2007 be a great year for Magic-League.

nice article gfo

Very good article. I actually read it. And thanks so much for the grammar lesson! However little I need it, there are obviously umpteen and twelve people who do. x.x

by Wiley on 2006-12-31 09:41 MDT

Actually from my personal experience I might say that Aggroking was this year's best player, just because everytime I play him he smokes me. Wait same with tomf. Ah whatever.

Gfo, if you're eager to try out new programs for the league, why not track down that guy who made a program called Scroll Rack? He promoted it like it was the best thing since sliced bread.

it was all great... exept for this.

<Pete278> I'll probably end up regret saying this, but I believe that Tidus13 was the best player on magic-league this year. I don't know why, I just have this feeling this he is. Never doubt my opinions.

seriously, that made me cry, and then i had the sudden urge to go kill somthing cute and fuzzy.

good article

by ShadowS on 2006-12-31 10:44 MDT

Oh nertz, I have to be out with carpal tunnel when he starts surveying people.

I def have to say that PV is a big part of this league now. I would really suggest the next time a big event rolls around, the M-L staff sends him a nice promoting T-shirt or something.

I used to think the MWS switch was stupid. Now I think both programs are stupid. I gotta choose between one that gives me inf problems (MWS) or one where people can cheat. Long live the next good program!

Mindmaster Trials, forsooth.

Ah well, I better stop typing, my carpal will never heal at this rate.

by aggroking on 2006-12-31 10:45 MDT

hm what about some kind of propoint system?
i mean a trial win could give 2 propoints, 2nd place 1 and master top 8 8-6-4-4-2-2-2-2.
and the top8 of the propointslist could receive boni in form of invitations and/or byes.
what do you think about my idea?
and the ml-player that won the most money in rl 2006 is without any doubt jaymo.
no joke, jaymo is the pro tour winner jan moritz merkel, even if his rating here is bad!

by Tidus- on 2006-12-31 10:59 MDT

Wow

I Have enjoyed this year of magic-league and i belive that it has made me a much better player.

Ty Pete for tour comment but i have a long way to go yet :)

Best player in the league is thalai when he plays no dout about it

what do you think about the idea`?

by smallface99 on 2006-12-31 12:56 MDT

Props to VonDouche for his comment about needing more teachers and less assholes. I am personally sick of people being dicks to n00bs, especially when they themselves aren't exactly a top notch player. You were new too sometime, stop being an asshole.

lol @ VonDouche of all people complaining of people being assholes by the way.

The best thing to happen to magic-league in 2006 was obviously Rat's article.

Gfo: the release should be sooner then later. I fixed the last bug, so i need a faster connection. Where i am at sucks so I'm just waiting for something better. Tops 1 month soonest 2 days. Btw you know your the first to get it. Also coming up an Update for Netdraft FOR ALL YOU DRAFTY FREAKS.
