Champs Report: *1st*
Written by ringman on November 17, 2006 Champs Report: *1st*by ringmanSo I wake up at around 8 a.m. and do the usual things (I’m not getting into details). I got a ride to the tournament site and was pretty chilled up. Usually I would be stressed, thinking what deck I could get all the cards for, but this time I didn’t even move a finger because I had all the cards with the exception of two Akroma, Angel of Wrath. Since I built the solar flare build I knew I would never get the Akromas, so I replaced them with Skeletal Vampire and Debtor’s Knell. Here is the decklist I played at champs:
![]() After thirty minutes waiting for it to start, I checked the pairings and get paired against a good player that is playing solar flare (I only found out because he has a bad habit of shuffling the deck while waiting). Round One Here must have been where I made my only mistake of the whole tournament that cost me a game. He won the die roll and he kicked off with a Watery Grave. I play land, go. Then he plays Godless Shrine and passes. I play a bounce to discard angel, hoping for a fourth turn zombify into his bounce. Here is where I made the mistake knowing he was with solar pox. He plays flagstones of trokair and Smallpoxes. He discards Akroma and searches for a land. Right there I knew he had Dread Return, and as I didn’t have any Condemns in hand, I could never win it unless I drew a Condemn. He Dread Returns his Akroma and I never draw a Condemn. I sided in annex, nightmare voids and two withered wretch. Game two starts with the usual dual-go, Court Hussar-go or signet-go, but at some point he had only three lands in hand and he missed about two land drops. I drew a research and played it into triple annex (how lucky)! The rest of the game he never drew a land, and I won easily. Game three he puts Mortify back in to fight Annex, and I let them in because mortify can kill all my creatures, so it’s better to kill annex than my creatures or debtor’s knell. We both start flooding despite the fact that he has a nighmare void working, but as I never drew anything efficient he never really got that much advantage. Then in a crucial turn I managed to play two Researches and a Careful Consideration to get my hand full and play an Angel of Despair, killing his bounce. He opted to dredge Nighmare Void, but it was a mistake having in consideration he would draw Akroma and Dread Return. Well we never know! He managed to take a condemn out of my hand, and on the next turn I drew a nightmare void, taking out his only mortify and immediately dropping a debtor’s knell. He drew and it wasn’t a mortify, so he gave me his hand and scooped. I was happy to win a round in which I made a horrible mistake because I probably didn’t deserve it. ![]() Round Two I’m paired against the player who gave me a ride home, and I’m pretty satisfied with this matchup (he is playing vore). Game one has no history because I simply started first and played a turn four Zombify into Angel of Despair on his land. He never got back into it. Game two he goes well with a third turn Blood Moon and a fourth turn solifuge, but I had a Court hussar and Wrath. He didn’t manage to deal the necessary points until I stabilized, dropped Circle of Protection: Red and played Debtor’s Knell. I go to round three pretty happy, knowing this champs will have only five rounds, so I needed to win two more and id (intentional draw) to win a nice share of boosters. Round Three My opponent was a nice buddy who was playing solely for fun and managed to do pretty well with a ‘noob’ deck. He was playing monoblack with some pretty bad cards (for example: cremate in the maindeck). I’m sorry, but I can’t remember how the game was played, but I do know I won 2-0 in ten minutes and went to eat. ![]() Round Four Round four I am paired against a GW glare deck. He immediately asks me to ID, and then if both of us win the next round we will get first place and split the prize. I didn’t know him, and one of my friend was in the other semifinal. I said no and started shuffling. He starts land-birds-go, and I go land-go. He plays Yavimaya dryad, searching for a Temple Garden. I go land-signet-go, and he suddenly makes the worst mistake of the tournament: he attacks and then plays two Saffi Eriksdotter. Well, I said they were legendary, and suddenly he wants to go back. I don’t let him and win the game with the two to zero advantage. Game two has no history, as he went with a land-birds-call-call in his hand and never drew a second land. So there I was in finals. Everything went as I wanted to with the exception of my friend losing in the semis and placed third. I got home pretty happy with my nine boosters and managed to get angry because the best card I opened was a squire. I hope you enjoyed and managed to understand all I said; I might have made a few mistakes [editor’s note: there are some tense issues, but we’ll ignore them :p –gfo]. Thank you for reading, -ringman Comments:

by ubermike on 2006-11-24 01:37 MDT lol thats terrible, i had to play all 10 of my rounds to win my champs :(, this shouldnt count. by TheDarkMan on 2006-11-25 19:53 MDT The player who played two Saffi should have realized that he could respond to the second by sacrificing the first. but, ouch for not knowing an important part of the card. by Apocalipse16 on 2006-11-26 14:02 MDT Playing two Saffis isn't worst than Mana, mox, isamaru, isamaru... lol |
